This map shows the area and some hotel recommendations by popularity from Google Maps
Travel
Getting In
Aer Lingus fly direct from Dublin to Cancun. An internal flight from Cancun to Guadalajara takes about 3 hours.
There is a direct flight from Madrid to Guadalajara with Aeromexico, airline which has internal flights in Mexico.
It is also possible to fly to Guadalajara from all major US cities.
There are two low cost Mexican airlines, Volaris and Vivaaerobus, they are similar to Ryanair so be mindful of the luggage allowance and the extra cost they can add through the booking process, for example: TUA ( Tax added for the use of the airport).
Getting Around
The best way way to move around is using the Uber app.
There is also a metro (tren ligero) but this doesn’t go to the airport.
From the Airport
There is a Shuttle bus from the airport to the city that just started and it is still under some changes, we will provide more information closer to the wedding date to be more precise.
Travel around Guadalajara
Guadalajara is a big city and there is so much to see, these are some recommended places I can suggest.
First, is the city centre. This is always very busy and there is a lot of walking to do to visit all the areas. The most important places to see are: The Cathedral, Plaza De Armas, Plaza Guadalajara, Plaza Liberación, Teatro Degollado and La Rotonda De Los Hombres Ilustres. All these places are nearby the city centre, there are restaurants, bars and museums.
Also we can recommend two places in particular for drinks. The Hilton hotel has a rooftop restaurant with amazing views of the main square of Guadalajara and the Cantina La Fuente.
With a bit of a stroll you can arrive to Plaza Tapatia and then you could visit El Hospicio Cabañas cultural centre (Unesco) and Mercado Libertad o San Juan de Dios which is the biggest enclosed market in Latin America, where you can find from souvenirs, fruit, clothes, food, birds and more…
The best area for nightlife is around Chapultepec which has lots of bars and restaurants.
Other places it might be interesting to visit are: Basilica de Zapopan, La Minerva Fountain, El Parque El Mirador that has an amazing view of La Barranca de Huentitan, a canyon that is in close proximity to the city, it is possible to hike to the bottom of the canyon although the entrance is around a neighbourhood that might be a bit sketchy.
A place that is a must see apart from the main city centre is Tlaquepaque described as a “small town within the city”.
If you want to extend the visit outside of Guadalajara, we would recommend, The town of Tequila is about an 1 or 2 hour outside the city and is also a must visit; Chapala, Ajijic, Jocotepec and San Juan Cosala (place with hot springs), all those are small towns around Chapala which is the biggest lake in Mexico and is also around 1 or 2 hours from Guadalajara depending on traffic.
Besides, if you are interested in visiting an archeological site, there is one in relatively close proximity to Guadalajara, called Los Guachimontones, which are round pyramids constructed 300 BCE to 450/500 CE .
I recommend that you travel within the city on the tren ligero that goes from the cathedral to the mercado San Juan de Dios, also going to Zapopan and Tlaquepaque, other places it would be better to use Uber.
